Catholic hospitals, charities, schools, and universities gone in two years?

Cardinal George of Chicago has a dire prediction.  If the HHS mandate is not rescinded, the Catholic Church in the United States will be forced to close hospitals, charities, social services, schools, and universities.  He says:

What will happen if the HHS regulations are not rescinded? A Catholic institution, so far as I can see right now, will have one of four choices: 1) secularize itself, breaking its connection to the Church, her moral and social teachings and the oversight of its ministry by the local bishop. This is a form of theft. It means the Church will not be permitted to have an institutional voice in public life.  2) Pay exorbitant annual fines to avoid paying for insurance policies that cover abortifacient drugs, artificial contraception and sterilization. This is not economically sustainable.         3) Sell the institution to a non-Catholic group or to a local government.       4) Close down …

As you read, think about the Obama administration’s goals in this controversy.  Remember that this is a fight that the administration picked.  The administration chose to directly confront the Church and force her into this corner.  The administration could have pushed any other aspect of Obamacare, but instead chose to force this issue first.  While the issue of religious freedom affects all Americans, this confrontation most directly affects Catholics and our institutions and services.  Nobody else has such unified, unchanging doctrines about abortion, sterilization, and contraception.  Nobody else has such a broad range of social, health, and educational services.  Catholic institutions are the second largest health care provider and the second largest educator in the country, after the government.  If this HHS mandate forces the Catholic Church to close hospitals, social services, and schools, who will take up the slack?  It will be the government, which will not longer have a challenger in these arenas, and a challenger with firm moral teachings.

One Response to Catholic hospitals, charities, schools, and universities gone in two years?

  1. Mary Ann Clasen says:

The insurance companies will add the cost into higher premiums. The “patient” will cry discrimination when refused an abortion at a Catholic run hospital and file a law suit. Obama backed the muslim’s building the mosque at ground zero “because our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable.” Why isn’t the Catholic Church being offered the same religious freedom? Why does obama think he can throw out the 1st amendment?
