Religious Freedom is Social Justice

Some Catholic writers have recently written that the Church will lose all credibility as a leader in social justice issues if the Bishops continue their fight against the HHS mandate.  These writers accuse the Bishops of descending into partisan politics.  George Weigel writes a cogent response to these misguided themes. 

An excerpt from Weigel’s article:

Thus when John Paul II, addressing the United Nations in 1979, described religious freedom as the first of human rights, and when the same pope, in the same venue in 1995, cited the role of religious freedom in the helping bring about the collapse of European Communism, he was making a profound statement about social justice.
