The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

Although it passed somewhat unnoticed at the time (at least by Libertas Northern Nevada), the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops released its own pastoral letter on religious liberty in May. While the Canadian missive covers much of the same territory as the USCCB’s Our First Most Cherished Liberty, it serves, nonetheless, to contextualize the American struggle to defend religious freedom against the backdrop of an “aggressive relativism” which one may observed throughout Western Culture. The President of the Canadian Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton, affirms that freedom of conscience and of religion “are inherited rights, they are not granted by the state, therefore they cannot be taken away by the state, but must instead be honoured and protected by the state. Where this does not happen, we feel impelled to speak.”
