Diocese of Erie seeks injunction against the HHS mandate

The Catholic Diocese of Erie has requested U.S. District Judge Sean McLauglin enjoin the federal government from enforcing the HHS mandate against the diocese.  The diocese is asking for immediate relief from the mandate so that it can plan its insurance coverage for 2013, among other things.

In Wednesday’s filing, the diocese’s lawyers said,

Absent an injunction, the diocese’s institutions will suffer irreparable harms because they will be forced to decide between violating their religious beliefs, abandoning their religious mission and violating the law.

Though the mandate is not enforced against the diocese until August 2013, the diocese reasons that they must plan for insurance and plan their budget far in advance of that date.
