15 Catholic colleges support Wheaton and Belmont Abbey against the HHS

The Cardinal Newman Society has organized 15 Catholic colleges in signing an amicus brief in support of Evangelical Wheaton College and Catholic Belmont Abbey College and their lawsuit against the HHS mandate.  The lawsuits of both colleges were dismissed by a D.C. circuit court judge, who said that they were protected by the one-year “safe harbor” offered by the Obama administration.

The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty has appealed the dismissal, noting that, even though the fines have not started for these colleges under the “safe harbor” rules, the HHS mandate is in effect.  Both colleges are at a disadvantage while trying to hire new faculty or staff, because the new hires know that they might lose their employee-provided health insurance when the “safe harbor” expires.
