Bishop Paprocki warns against “Religious Freedom” bill in Illinois

Bishop Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois, has written a letter warning against a bill that will be considered by state legislators, deceptively named “The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.”  Among other things, the bill would redefine marriage to legally recognize same-sex “marriages,” which of course is beyond the capability of any state.

As worrisome as the attempt to redefine marriage, the bill is a direct attack on the religious freedom of people who believe that same-sex “marriage” is a grave moral evil.  The bill would not protect the Knights of Columbus, should they refuse to rent their meeting hall for such a “marriage” ceremony or reception.  The bill would not protect Catholic Church agencies who refused to hire someone in a same-sex “marriage” into a teaching or ministry position.  The Church could be forced by the state to hire people who teach against the faith.

Tolerance is only for those who set the rules.
