A baker in Oregon is under investigation by the state for refusing to prepare a wedding cake for a gay couple. Aaron Klein of Gresham, Oregon, is accused (by one of the couple) of refusing to prepare a cake because they were “abominations to the Lord.” Klein admits to refusing to prepare the cake, but denies making the rather harsh statement. Klein says that he believes, because of his religious beliefs, that he cannot recognize a gay “marriage.”
The Oregon Equality Act of 2007, which includes businesses, prohibits discrimination against people based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. According to some commentaries, Klein’s religious beliefs don’t allow him to break this statute. Oregon does not have a Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
